Walk the streets in “The City of Brotherly Love” as you enjoy the sights of the old and the new and taste the “Foods of Philly” that make Philadelphia a culinary delight.
Your morning begins at The Cathedral Basilica of Saints Peter and Paul. Your privately arranged “ambassadorial tour” will guide you through this house of worship, the largest brownstone structure and one of the most architecturally eminent buildings in Philadelphia. Erected between 1846 and 1864 and modeled after the Lombard Church of St. Charles in Rome, the edifice is 136 feet wide, 216 feet long, and 101 feet high, making it the largest Roman Catholic church in Pennsylvania. Its interior contains a myriad of frescoes and paintings by Constantino Brumidi, (1805-1880) known as the Michelangelo of the United States Capitol. Brumidi’s work is highlighted by his striking “Assumption of Our Lady” and his moving “Angels of Passion.” Mosaic murals adorn the walls and depict people and events in the Church’s history. Of special note is the south side ceramic mosaic that illustrates the life and works of Saint John Newmann. A north side ceramic mural portrays the churches burned during Philadelphia’s Nativist’s Riots of 1837.
You will then proceed to the newest addition to the Philadelphia skyline, the Comcast Center. The 58-story, 975 feet high office building opened June 6, 2008, and is America’s tallest green building. Here you will have time on your own to view the Comcast Experience, the world’s largest indoor LED Screen video; the dynamic 12-piece sculpture “Humanity in Motion” by world-renown artist Jonathan Borofsky; and the one-half acre landscaped public park.
Then it is your turn to indulge in Philly’s food, history, and culture. You will eat like a local on this Philadelphia-themed tour that you are sure to enjoy. This fun and delicious excursion takes place in the heart of Philadelphia and includes 6 stops, more than 2 hours of indulging and less than 30 minutes of walking. You will get the inside scoop on Philly’s food history with quirky stories about how some of these iconic foods came to be and learn some inside tips about the best places to eat in the city. This one-of-a-kind tasting experience will take you to an authentic mom and pop pizzeria, a soft pretzel bakery, the historic Reading Terminal Market and much more.
